While it is proof of how badly the Old Testament can explain things, the Book of Job is fiction. Joshua's conquest of Canaan and the genocide herein was probably greatly exaggerated in the Bible, but it did happen. Cities were razed because God said such to the Israelites. It's unfortunate and poorly justified (could they have not deported the Canaanites?), and I don't really see why it had to happen at all.
